WASHINGTON — Amrit Sekhon today was named Deputy Comptroller for Capital and Regulatory Policy at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
In this role, Mr. Sekhon will serve as the key advisor to the Comptroller on current and emerging domestic and international policies related to bank capital and as the Comptroller’s representative for Basel Committee meetings.
“Over the years, Amrit has frequently served as the OCC representative on a variety of Basel subgroups, including chairing the Ratings and Securitization Subgroup that has been responsible for developing capital treatment for complex structured financial transactions,” said Jennifer Kelly, Senior Deputy Comptroller for Bank Supervision Policy and Chief National Bank Examiner. “This experience will serve him well in his new role, and we are fortunate to be able to turn to such a well-qualified candidate to fill this important position.”
Mr. Sekhon joined the OCC in 1998 as a risk specialist in the Capital Policy division. Over the years, he moved into positions of increasing responsibility, eventually becoming the Director for Capital Policy in July 2007. Mr. Sekhon will assume these duties October 4, 2015, and will succeed Charles Taylor. During Mr. Taylor’s tenure, he oversaw the implementation of the Dodd-Frank capital and leverage rules and chaired the Basel Committee’s Supervision and Implementation Group where he launched several significant initiatives.
Prior to joining the OCC in 1998, Mr. Sekhon spent time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine where he taught courses in finance, economics, and accounting at the university level. He also served as a Senior Financial Analyst at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation.
Mr. Sekhon graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1990 with a degree in aerospace engineering and went on to the University of Notre Dame to earn an MBA in 1992.
