WASHINGTON—The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency today joined several other federal agencies and consumer groups to raise awareness and help inform consumers as part of a National Consumer Protection Week event on Capitol Hill.
"The OCC joined with members of Congress at this event in order to highlight the importance of financial literacy in consumer protection," said Comptroller of the Currency John C. Dugan. "Informed consumers not only make better financial decisions, they can also better protect themselves against unfair, deceptive, and fraudulent practices, and that's good for consumers, good for national banks, and good for the economy."
The OCC supported this year's consumer protection week theme, "Read Up and Reach Out: Be an Informed Consumer," by sharing information, resources, and providing staff to answer questions at the event. Information provided by the agency addressed topics that include gift cards, cashiers checks, nontraditional mortgages, credit cards, and the OCC's Customer Assistance Group. Many of the materials highlighted at the event are available on a new OCC web page at https://www.occ.gov/topics/consumer-protection/index-consumer-protection.html.
The OCC's Customer Assistance Group is available to help national bank customers with questions or complaints from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday-Friday, at 1-800-613-6743, or by emailing Customer.Assistance@occ.treas.gov.
Consumers can find a wide range of information related to banking products and services on the web at https://www.occ.gov.
